Message from President

Good news.... whitewater paddling is strong.  As we have seen from more events, news on site construction, and paddlers' posts on social media - whitewater kayaking and canoeing is enjoying a strong resurgence.

Despite questions of a short spring, we have had a number of rainy days, so rivers have been high and paddlers took advantage of it for an extended Spring.  This year we began promoting all whitewater events, whether WO club or just a reputable organizer,  to encourage information sharing and greater participation.

Tragically our province also had ill-equipped citizens head out in river trips only to flip and drown without lifejackets.  There were 2 paddler drownings in the GTA and 1 in Muskoka - factors were inexperience, and lack of PFDs.    Since many of our clubs are considered the subject matter experts, I encourage you to talk with your local OPP Marine Officer, Conservation Area, how you as a paddler or your club can promote proper PFD use, and safe river paddling.

Clubs are the safest and most effective way to paddle.  Below you will read news on recreational whitewater events, fun and serious competitions, athlete training, upcoming Nationals Championships, and Ottawa Clubhouse construction, and the Fix-The-Gull project.

We have a fantastic sport.  As much as we get out of it, we should put into it.  It is a responsibility to share it with others.  If you wish to get involved locally with a club, or on a specific event or whitewater project, please reach out to myself or Eric Betteridge (VP - Ottawa) for who to connect with.

Thank you for being a member and supporting whitewater,

    Dave Gillespie - WO President
