In September WO’s Advocacy Committee applied to Mountain Equipment Coop for a grant under the ‘Access and Activity’ category of their Community Contributions program. Access and Activity Grants support programs, initiatives and infrastructure projects that encourage backcountry, urban and near-urban outdoor recreation, and the project must focus on one or more self-propelled activities supported by MEC (such as cycling, hiking, trail-running, climbing and paddling). To find out more about the program go to: www.mec.ca/community

We are very happy to report that we have been awarded a $3000 grant and these funds will provide critical support to help our Advocacy Committee’s planned activities for 2011-2012. The funds are intended to help pay for WO river access signage, maintaining/securing access with local landowners and also to help us launch an annual Advocacy Paddling Festival, tentatively planned to take place at the Ottawa River on the July long weekend in 2012. The festival will have  three goals:

1.       To raise awareness of Ontario river issues

2.       To deepen our understanding of river advocacy strategies

3.       To provide the WO Advocacy Committee with a sustainable source of funding for future advocacy initiatives

We sincerely appreciate MEC's support. If you are interested in volunteering for the Advocacy Paddle Festival or any Advocacy Committee activities, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
