Ontario Results at 2010 Junior World Slalom Championships:

Three Ontario athletes, Michael Tayler (K1), Rachel Penman (K1W) and Alexandra Mcgee (C1W) were part of the seven person Canadian team competing at this year’s Junior (under 19) World Championships in the Pyrenees at Foix, France.

On the first day of qualification, Rachael Penman of Ottawa ended up in 38th place in a strong women’s K1 field and did not advance. Team-mates Jaz Dennhollander (BC), and Marissa Dederer (Alta) made it through to the semi (top 30) with strong runs in a very tough field. but did not qualify for the final (Jaz missing by just 12 one-hundredths and 5 places!).

On day two, Alexandra McGee, also from Ontario, uncorked an amazing run in the women's C1 and after first runs she was sitting in 4th place.  Her second run was not as good and she ended up ninth overall for the day with a time, qualifying for the semi finals. Unfortunately pushing for a fast time. Alex missed a gate (50 sec time penalty) and ended up a disappointing 16th. This is the first Junior World Championships which have included women's C1.

Michael Tayler of Ottawa laid down a scorching run in the men's kayak class, just 2.82 seconds back from the fastest boat, but in 11th place (that’s how competitive it is at the world class level!).  His former Ottawa River Runner training partner Jiri Prskavec of the Czech Republic ended the day in fifth place. With the top 10 moving to the final, Michael put in a great effort in the semi final, but two small mistakes left him four-tenths of a second out of the last qualifying spot, in unlucky 13th place.

All three will compete at the upcoming national slalom championships in Minden July 31-Aug1st, and try to capture Canadian titles in their respective events.

MEMBER FEEDBACK

Hello Jim and all at WO,

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for the financial support you have given the athletes this year who attended team trials.  As a parent of Aliesha I can tell you that this support is greatly appreciated and I just want you all to know that your generosity has not gone unnoticed.

Deepest Regards,

Liz

MEMBERSHIP

Whitewater Ontario Stickers are here!! We will be distributing Whitewater Ontario stickers to members through Whitewater Ontario member clubs and commercial members throughout the rest of the summer so keep your eyes peeled! Clubs we will also be sending you some WO promo cards for you to give out to anyone you meet on the river who needs some more info about Whitewater Ontario. Some behind the scenes work is going on to increase the flexibility of our membership database to enable us to get electronic/printable membership cards to our members.

CLUBS! Want to give something back to your community and promote paddling? Do you have access to equipment, pool time and some spare time? Here's an idea for this Winter. How about putting on an outreach session for a local youth group? Last year, McMaster Whitewater ran an open pool session one weekend for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Hamilton/Burlington and it was a great success. We had races and relays, we played sharks and minnows and most of the kids wanted to turn their kayaks into submarines. We had a photo slideshow to occupy those not paddling and tons of MW volunteers to help make sure everything went smoothly. What better way to spend a cold afternoon in November.

Thanks!
Laura

MINDEN WILD WATER PRESERVE

It’s been a busy, busy month and now we finally have some water in the Gull and campers are starting to return. Yippee J

Lot’s of progress in the Park and, a few ups and downs:

Ø      The outdoor Rinse Station is completely finished and functional. We request that users be stingy with the water (hot and cold) as it comes from our well.

Ø      The former wood shed has a new roof and will be used to store grounds equipment.

Ø      A very successful Opportunities for Youth program was held July 10-11!!!!!!! Thanks to all organizers, instructors, volunteers and great kids. Check out the WO Website http://whitewaterontario.ca/the-preserve-news/235 opportunities-for-youth.html and    Boatwerks  http://www.boatwerks.net/boater-board for the complete story and pictures.

Ø      Lots of paint staining going on to provide a consistent look to all the buildings.

Ø      Where has all the firewood gone? Revenues don’t seem to jibe with the amount of wood used. Firewood is available for campers at a fee ($5 – members; $8 – non members) please pay into the box provided.

Ø      As a reminder, the Park does have quiet hours (i.e. no disturbance of other campers) from 11pm to 8am. Please be respectful of others.

Ø      The Preserve will be in great shape for Nationals!

Ø      A very successful (but hot) Horseshoe Lake Walk, Run & Bike around the lake were held on July 10 at the Preserve.

Ø      The week of July 12 saw a new user of the Preserve, the Monarch Bible Camp. A day use group of +50 kids and 1 1:5 supervisor ratio. The large shelter came in handy during a heavy rainstorm!
