How to patrol
This article is part of the Category:How to series.
Introduction
In order to keep the content of this wiki at a high standard, site administrators need to regularly perform a task called patrolling. At a high level this consists of locating the recent changes and newly added articles and reviewing them for:
- Conformance to site standards
- Misuse
- Problems with formatting and tag use
Before patrolling, be sure to read the site guidelines and any other pertinent information.
Patrolling new articles
To patrol new articles:
- Locate any new pages
- Visit and review each unpatrolled page (these should be highlighted in the list)
- Make any changes necessary
- Mark the article as patrolled by clicking on the Mark this page as patrolled link at the bottom
Patrolling changes
To patrol changes:
- Locate any changes
- Click on the diff link beside each change
- If the change is acceptable, mark the change as patrolled by clicking on the Mark as patrolled link
Tools you can use
Some macros have been developed to help with the editorial process. These are not exclusively for use by administrators, but they can be useful when patrolling. Their main purpose is to flag articles as needing attention. By using them you can indicate that some work is needed without having to do it yourself or at that time. These macros are:
- {{Template:Accuracy}}
- Used to flag an article as possibly inaccurate.
- {{Template:Expand}}
- To indicate that an article needs to be expanded with more information
- {{Template:Standards}}
- To indicate that an article does not meet site standards
- {{Template:Inappropriate}}
- To indicate that an article is inappropriate for this wiki
If you choose to flag any article with one or more of these templates it is probably a good idea to also include some further information in the article's Talk page.
