| A Minden Wild Water Preserve Committee Initiative
Since the inception of the MWWP committee, as a result of the Forward Strokes initiative, one of its on going concerns is utilizing the Preserve's resources not only for Whitewater Ontario members and their events, but also for the surrounding community. Its always a shock when we hear of people who have lived in the area for years and years and have no idea where the Preserve is or what it does. Along with the day-to-day maintenance and upgrading of the facilities, one of the challenges facing the MWWP committee is integrating itself into the local community that it finds itself residing in.
In other words, how can we engage the local community? What could we offer that would bring them to us? We have boats, a camp site, a building with a kitchen, and a river with volunteers' expertise to guide people down. They have children. The mix became obvious.
On the weekend of July 10/11, the MWWP Committee hosted an introduction to paddling event for the local kids from Archie Stouffer Elementary School in Minden. Armed with sleeping bags, tents and enthusiasm, 15 students, who ranged from grade 6-8, with little or no whitewater paddling experience, descended upon the grounds of the Preserve anxious to give the Gull a go.
For the next two days, the MWWP volunteer instructors and their assistants took these young "newbies" from wet exists to the basic strokes, simple peel ins and outs and ferrying. We even had several of them rolling by Sunday! This was a no pressure situation and the kids decided how far they wanted to push their limits. While some were determined to stay in the current and learn to roll, others who were more tentative (we've all been there), worked on flat water moves or just went swimming. The goal was to have fun experiencing the river and the pictures that John Slot took are a testimony to that.

Meals where supplied by WO and a generous donation from Jaime Dollo and Mike Macnaull, owners and operators of the Minden Foodland, and support from WO. Thanks must also go out to Joan Duhaime and Jane Klarer-Lackey for taking on all the cooking duties and keeping everyone involved well fed.
The certified volunteer instructors included Connor Duhaime, Leah Kindree, and Jon McPhee. They were greatly assisted by volunteers Cameron Lackey, Russ Duhaime, John Slot, and Russ Lackey. Even Steve Pomeroy assisted, paddling a very odd looking craft that very well may have been a big creek boat squashed by a truck. Dare say, could it have originated from the "dark side"?
It should be noted that thanks must go out to AO/Boatwerks for their generous donation of prizes for the kids as well as the loan of their "ducky" inflatable kayaks which gave us the chance to run each kid down once or twice to experience the sensation of running rapids. A rodeo was organized by Neal Ross-Ross and held at Earls on Saturday evening to illustrate the wilder aspects of kayaking. Great show by all who participated.
Without a doubt, the weekend was a huge success! The enthusiasm of the students and the volunteers all working cooperatively together was inspiring, making this pilot venture a must to repeat. A big thanks to ALL involved, kids and adults alike, for taking the time and energy to engage themselves and share with each other, creating a positive experience for all involved. This is surely to become an annual event and with a little luck we hope to expand on it for years to come.

| The Minden Wildwater Preserve was mentoined in the local Minden Times newspaper recently in conjunction with the unusually low Spring water levels and the cancellation of Gulllfest this year. Here is the text of the article, courtesy of the Minden Times and Sun Media:
"Gullfest cancelled due to low water levels Posted By Chad Ingram
Gullfest 2010 has been cancelled.
White Water Ontario announced last week that is was cancelling the annual kayaking event, held at the Minden Wild Water Preserve, due to low water levels on the Gull River.
"This has been one of the driest springs on record due to lack of snow," said John Slot, director of the preserve. "We waited to the last minute to reach our decision to cancel as a considerable amount of pre-planning goes into such an event." While Slot said the river at the preserve is still passable at low levels – something he called "bump and grind" – he said trying to run the event with water levels this low did present "a different degree of risk and challenge."
The event was scheduled to run on July 3 and 4.
Gullfest typically sees anywhere from 100 to 300 participants and includes paddling events such as flips, acrobatics and surfing, boatercross, where participants simultaneously head down the course, as well as camping, music and barbecuing. Gullfest has been happening for the past decade and it's the first time the event has been cancelled due to a lack of water. It was the third major river festival Slot knew of to be cancelled this year because of low water; organizers of the Marmora Area Canoe and Kayak Festival and Quebec's Kipawa River Rally have also announced their events will not be running. Water levels throughout the county are lower than usual after a winter with little snow and a spring with little rain."

| Hi All
In loo of Gullfest 2010 a rodeo is being held at the Gull on July 25th. Steve Pomeroy of WO has done an awesome job and negotiated a release.
There will be a guaranteed 18cms flowing in the river ( which roughly equates to 8.2 or 8.3 on the gauge).
Keeping in mind that not everyone wants to be a rodeo star, the rodeo won't be starting till 11:30am. Free paddle from 9-11:30am. This will leave Earls wide open for anyone who wants to show up and throw down or rock a side surf like its 1999.
There will be three classes to compete in. Mens, Womens, Junior.
I apologize for such short notice.
At this point in time I am looking for a few volunteers to help out. We will need a few qualified volunteers to help run some safety for the event. This equates to a few safety boaters as well as some people set up and ready with throwbags.
i am also looking for 2 volunteers to help with registration the day of the event.
The event is being held on a Sunday but if you would like to paddle the day before and camp feel free! camping is $15 for non WO members and $10 for WO members.
There will be a $10 entry fee for the rodeo payable the day you register.
If you have any questions please feel free to post here. I am going to run a poll so we can get an idea of numbers. If your interested in coming please do the poll.
If you would like to volunteer please email me at

With the low water levels in many locations, including the Gull, Whitewater Ontario has arranged a water release for Sunday July 25th, 2010, 9am - 4pm. This is intended for the playboat and open boat members and paddling community. To assist in covering the cost of a release, WO is asking paddlers to contribute $10. The river will be available to all paddlers and we will also host both a rodeo event at Earl's and a boater-cross from the dam to Otter slide.
The release will be significant at 18cms, which should make Earl's into a great hole for play and rodeo, as well as the lower wave below Otter slide, depending on lake levels.
Watch for a separate posting from Brodee, the rodeo event organizer, for details on the rodeo event as well as a call for volunteers to help with the event.
Entries for boater-cross and rodeo at the MWWP will be on the day of the event 9-10am. There will be a free paddle from 9-11:30am, rodeo at 11:30am-2pm and boater-cross at 3pm.
Hope to see you on the river. |

| A note from Jeff Strano that may be of interest:
Hi All,
I got a hold of David Ness at the TSW and we had a good chat. He is telling me that they pulled a half log today and in the next two weeks will be pulling another...so in all probability we will have low, but runnable levels at the Gull by July.
Cheers, Jeff
